Mayte, siempre de negro, y María, de blanco impoluto, tras probar fortuna en una sala de bailes de Zaragoza como "Venus" fueron despedidas tras ser consideradas demasiado elegantes (Zaragoza siempre ha sido una plaza dura, deberían haber enseñado más pierna).
Tras el fracaso inicial se cambiaron el nombre por "Baccara" y se fueron a Hamburgo a grabar un disco. Su primera canción, "Yes sir I can Boogie" arrasó en las listas de éxitos, siendo las primeras artistas españolas en conseguir un número uno absoluto en Reino Unido.
En 1978 fueron elegidas para representar a Luxemburgo en el Festival de Eurovisión con el tema "Parlez vous Français?" quedando en séptima posición pero siendo la canción más vendida.
Innumerables éxitos les sucedieron como "Sorry I am a Lady", "The devil sent you to Laredo" o "Ay ay sailor", siendo consideradas "las reinas de las discotecas".... hasta su separación, María formó las "New Baccara" y Mayte continuó con otras parejas como "Baccara"
